Taxes are compulsory, unrequited payments, in cash or in kind, made by institutional units to government units. This indicator is expressed as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) which is the total income earned through the production of goods and services in an economic territory during an accounting period.
What the numbers show
Tax revenue (% of GDP) is currently reported for 157 countries. The highest value is 35.4% in Lesotho; the lowest is 0.6% in United Arab Emirates.
The median across all reporting countries is 16.9%, and the mean is 16.6%.
The gap between the highest and lowest reporting country is a factor of about 55.
Over the past decade 93 countries rose and 62 fell. The largest increase was in Saudi Arabia (up 203.8%), and the largest decrease in East Timor (down 85.3%).
