Analysis
In 2024, nitrous oxide (n2o) emissions from building (energy) in Australia stood at 1.73 Mt CO2e. That is the highest value across all 55 years on record.
The figure is up 2.8% on the previous year and up 25.9% over ten years.
Over the whole period, nitrous oxide (n2o) emissions from building (energy) in Australia peaked at 1.73 Mt CO2e in 2024 and was at its lowest, 0.3433 Mt CO2e, in 1974.
That places Australia 7th out of 197 countries with data for 2024, putting it in the top 10%.
The series is highly variable year to year, so single readings are best treated with caution.

About this data
A measure of annual emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), one of the six Kyoto greenhouse gases (GHG), from the building sector (subsector of the energy sector) including IPCC 2006 codes 1.A.4 Residential and other sectors, 1.A.5 Non-Specified. The measure is standardized to carbon dioxide equivalent values using the Global Warming Potential (GWP) factors of IPCC's 5th Assessment Report (AR5).
