Bank nonperforming loans to total gross loans (%) is currently reported for 149 countries. The highest value is 31.5% in Chad; the lowest is 0.2% in Monaco.
The median across all reporting countries is 3.1%, and the mean is 5.2%.
The gap between the highest and lowest reporting country is a factor of about 131.
Over the past decade 58 countries rose and 88 fell. The largest increase was in Macao (up 3,600.2%), and the largest decrease in Cyprus (down 95.5%).

The indicator measures the proportion of a deposit taker’s loan portfolio that is impaired or at risk of default. It is calculated as the ratio of non-performing loans (NPLs) to total gross loans, where NPLs are defined as loans that are past due by 90 days or more or are otherwise considered unlikely to be repaid in full without the realization of collateral. Both non-performing loans and total gross loans should be reported at their gross book value, without deducting for loan-loss provisions or collateral. This indicator provides a key measure of asset quality and potential credit risk in the banking system.
